Gingivitis is the technical term used to refer to gum disease. It is not usually a serious condition but can develop into other more harmful medical conditions if left untreated. 70% of all adults over 65 years of age will have gingivitis and since it often causes little or no discomfort to the infected person, most of these people are unlikely to know that they even have it. It usually first presents itself in areas which are more difficult to clean with a toothbrush or in patients who do not keep on top of their oral hygiene. The infection is caused by a build-up of bacteria over a length of time. Your body’s natural reaction is to fight the bacteria and this causes the gums to become inflamed. It is this inflammation which is called gingivitis.
The easiest way to deal with gingivitis is to avoid getting it in the first place. This sounds like extremely unhelpful advice, but it is actually relatively simple to prevent. Stopping the plaque and bacteria from being able to build up on your teeth is the best way to stop yourself from developing gingivitis, and this is all do-able simply by improving your tooth brushing routine.
Experts recommend that in order to prevent yourself from getting gingivitis, you should be brushing your teeth thoroughly with a fluoride-based toothpaste every day, twice a day. In addition to this, you should also floss your teeth regularly, making sure to pay proper attention to the places where the toothbrush cannot reach. In between two teeth is a common area for plaque and bacteria to build up, so making sure that you clean these problem areas regularly is an important step in avoiding gingivitis.
Making sure you have regular check-ups at the dentist will also help to prevent you from developing gingivitis. There is a reason that we are supposed to visit our dentist on a regular basis: they will be able to spot when something is not quite right. When a dentist performs a scale and polish on your teeth, what he or she is doing is removing as much of the plaque which has built up as possible. Regularly undergoing this process will stop the plaque from being able to build up in large quantities.
If you are already doing all of these things, then chances are that you do not have gingivitis and are unlikely to contract it in the future. It can develop fairly quickly, though, so it is important to always be vigilant with your oral hygiene routine. As the experts always say, ‘the best offence is a good defense’, so keeping your teeth immaculate and not giving the bacteria time to multiply or develop inside your mouth is the best way to prevent yourself from being affected by gingivitis.
